When President Trump gathered some of America’s most powerful business leaders in Pittsburgh in July to announce $90 billion of investments in energy and artificial intelligence infrastructure, he hailed the former industrial powerhouse as being at the forefront of a “true golden age for America”.

Dave Vater, 55, an Uber driver from Pittsburgh, who is in the first generation of men in his family to not work in a steel mill since the 1890s, is among the many yet to be convinced by the AI data centre investments from companies including Google, Meta and Anthropic.
